Taking a shower just before work.  There’s this lump above The right breast …oh shit, shit, shit, shit, don”t even go there It can’t be…

Off to see Dr G, she thinks it’s too high up, the tissues too

Soft:  hopes uplifted.  Ultrasound and mammogram confirmed the dreaded diagnosis, breast cancer.  Words like malignancy, most commonly invasive ductal carcinoma.  Heavy words, heavier meaning

The pathologist (a friend) did an urgent fine needle biopsy, and by the afternoon, sat me down for a heart-to-heart talk.

Confirmed my worst nightmare, and more, there’s this thing called the regime of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.  More heavy words, I couldn’t carry anymore.  I went into a state of shock, disbelief, only absorbed every other line he churned out.

I was about to start work, but seeing how shaky I was, and Finding out the reason why, my boss told me to go home.  They were more worried about how I’d drive home.

Got hold of my friends and had a good cry.  Friends’ shoulders are extremely capacitating and comfortable when the mind is topsy turvy in turmoil.  Another friend offered her breast, obviously friends shared boobs too.  Rang my sister, support across the seas also came in abundance and unconditionally.

Lumpectomy on 24 April, followed by Chemotherapy and then Radiotherapy.  Everything sailed through so fast, there was no time to ponder nor brood nor worry.  Faith is also so important, to know that He walks beside me and helps me fight all the way.

That’s right, it’s a fight.  I am not a survivor, some of us don’t like that classification, but I am a fighter.  There’s plenty of research in this field now, but awareness is essential and all women should be empowered to know help is there.  We have to all fight together to win this battle.
