A LONG ROAD TO RECOVERY FOR YOUNG NELSON MICHAEL

Nelson anak Michael, aged 21 faced an uncertain future after a serious traffic accident that has rendered him semi-handicapped since last year (January 2011).

Nelson completed his Form 5 studies at SMK Pending three years ago.  After his studies, he stays at the village with his elder brother. On a rainy night in January last year (2011) while riding a motorcycle to a wedding, he knocked into a stationery lorry by the roadside of 28 Mile Kuching-Serian road due to poor visibility.

The brain surgeon at the hospital operated on him.  A second operation followed soon after he suffered from fits.  His left skull was removed and placed in his stomach still to enable the swollen brain to subside and heal.  Owing to the operation, his lost his left eye sight and his speech has been affected.

His father, Michael Impin took leave from work to care and tend to him for 6 months last year (2011).  Nelson’s right arm and leg were not able to move initially, but with physiotherapy he could move around with the aid of a clutch.  He is due for another surgery this year (2012) to remove the left skull from his stomach to be replanted onto his head.  Doctor said it will take about three years or more for him to return to his formal self.

In order to pay for his medical fee and living expenses, his father Michael Impin continues to work as a labourer and his mother, Bajik Singai works as a factory worker in Sejinkat.  During the day, Nelson is home alone at a rundown shack at the Sg Apong squatter colony.  His kind neighbour will keep an eye on him occasionally.

Over the weekend, Nelson’s parent will bring him back to their village Kampung Patik at Mile 28 to visit his eldest brother Evan who lives with his own family and also to attend the church service.

Nelson is one of the food recipients of a mobile soup kitchen managed by Society for Kuching Urban Poor (SKUP). He receives a packet of free meal daily from this NGO.

The family prays and hopes that Nelson could be fully recuperated from this unfortunate accident. Meanwhile, there is nothing much he could do but wait for the call from the hospital for his next major operation. The cost of the operation works out to be around RM800. According to his father, Nelson seems to be making remarkable progress in the last few months in his movement.  Thanks also to an NGO who is assisting him in physiotherapy.

We could make a little sacrifice for this young man who is going to be operated and rehabilitated in the next month or so (January or February 2012), a little contribution from each one of us will make a big difference.  If you wish to help, you can contact the father direct and bank into the account of his father, Michael anak Impin.
